๐ŸŽฏ Exam Tips & Techniques

Paper Structure

Paper 1 (2ยฝ hours, 150 marks): Finance, Data Handling, Probability

Paper 2 (2ยฝ hours, 150 marks): Measurement, Maps/Plans, Probability

You get a formula sheet in the exam โ€” learn how to use it, don't memorise formulas!

Time Management

You have roughly 1 mark per minute. A 6-mark question should take about 6 minutes.

Don't spend more than the allocated time on one question โ€” move on and come back.

Reading Questions

Underline key words in every question before you start working.

Look for words like "calculate", "determine", "explain", "justify" โ€” each one tells you what to do.

Many marks are lost by not reading the question properly!

Show Your Working

Always write down the formula first, then substitute, then calculate.

Even if you get the wrong answer, you can get method marks for showing your steps.

Example:
A = P(1 + i)โฟ
A = 5000(1 + 0.08)ยณ
A = 5000(1.259712)
A = R6 298.56

Context-Based Questions

Maths Lit questions are always in real-life contexts โ€” read the scenario carefully.

Tables, graphs, maps, and plans โ€” extract the data you need before calculating.

Check if answers make sense in the real world (e.g., a person can't be 500 years old).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not converting units (cm to m, ml to litres)
  • Forgetting to include units in your answer
  • Rounding too early โ€” only round the final answer
  • Misreading scales on graphs and maps
  • Not using the correct formula from the formula sheet

The Night Before

  • Don't cram โ€” review your formula sheet and key methods
  • Get a good night's sleep
  • Pack your calculator, ruler, pencil, pen, and eraser
  • Believe in yourself โ€” you've done the work!

๐Ÿ“‹ Formula Sheet

These formulas are provided in the exam. Practice using them!

Finance

A = P(1 + i ร— n)
Simple Interest
A = final amount, P = principal, i = interest rate (decimal), n = number of years
A = P(1 + i)โฟ
Compound Interest
A = final amount, P = principal, i = interest rate (decimal), n = number of years
Hire Purchase Amount = P(1 + i ร— n) + deposit
Hire Purchase
Uses simple interest on the balance after deposit
Exchange rate: Foreign = ZAR รท rate or ZAR = Foreign ร— rate
Currency Conversion

Measurement

Area of rectangle = length ร— width
Rectangle
Area of triangle = ยฝ ร— base ร— height
Triangle
Area of circle = ฯ€ ร— rยฒ
Circle
Volume of rectangular prism = l ร— w ร— h
Box / Rectangular Prism
Volume of cylinder = ฯ€ ร— rยฒ ร— h
Cylinder
Volume of triangular prism = ยฝ ร— b ร— h ร— H
Triangular Prism
Perimeter = sum of all sides
Perimeter
1 m = 100 cm = 1000 mm
1 km = 1000 m
1 litre = 1000 ml
1 mยณ = 1000 litres
Unit Conversions

Data Handling

Mean = sum of values รท number of values
Mean (Average)
Median = middle value when arranged in order
Median
Mode = most frequent value
Mode
Range = highest value โˆ’ lowest value
Range
Probability = number of favourable outcomes รท total outcomes
Probability

Maps & Plans

Actual distance = map distance ร— scale
Scale Calculations
Scale: 1 : 50 means 1 cm on map = 50 cm in real life
